Regulatory Science Fellow (2019 Cohort)
Currently employed as a Regulatory Officer in the Evaluations and Registration Division at the Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ), Mr Brilliant T Samunda is also a registered pharmacist with the Pharmacist Council of Zimbabwe. He graduated in 2016 from the University of Zimbabwe with a Bachelor of Pharmacy Honours Degree. Passionate about access to affordable and quality healthcare in Zimbabwe, he is also a public health and policy making enthusiast. His experiences and education have given him an appreciation of the impact of the pharmaceutical regulatory industry on public health. This in turn ignited an interest in exploring challenges and opportunities of harmonising the medicine regulatory process in resource limited settings such as lower middle income countries.
Area of research interest
Economic evaluation of harmonizing the medicine regulatory process in Africa.
What do you hope to gain from the fellowship?
The fellowship in regulatory science for African Medicine Reviewers/Assessors will afford me the opportunity to learn more and develop my expertise with the necessary knowledge and skills as required for an assessor. In addition, the program will enable me to disseminate the knowledge gained to my colleagues through our periodic in-house and Regional Centres of Regulatory Excellence (RCORE) training activities thus bridging the wide regulatory skills gap at Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ). Overall, the opportunity will go a long way in ensuring effective regulatory processes at our national regulatory agency (MCAZ) and in the Southern African Development Committee region (SADC).
